Exploring Planning
We knew that looking at planning applications can be a headache, so as our first planning application for Neighbourhood Public Square went live, we designed this notion page ourselves to help anyone to navigate our application, find out how to have their say, connect with us, and discover more about the journey so far to this moment.
Whilst designed quickly, we tried to bring together as many learnings and kinds legibility from our unpacking and understanding of the planning system so far alongside Architecture 00 and Turley. This included definitions and explainers for key terms, video materials, and how to guides to welcome and encourage those for whom planning wasn’t second nature, and may have never seen or commented on an application before. For those already confident with planning, this served to show more about our principles in action, and a small demonstration of how creative, participatory, vibrant and welcoming that we felt planning processes could be.
This page was supported by an open campaign online, printed invitations through doors, a public exhibition, and dedicated neighbourhood events to discuss and find out more about the application together, as shared further in It’s Planning Time!
**Whilst comments on the planning application are now closed, we are still awaiting the decision from Birmingham City Council.
Please cross your fingers for us!**

"Together, we are a commitment to this land as a site of reimagination, reuse and repair; a place to learn, build, eat, grow, care and organise; a home for the capacities, skills and relationships we need to face the challenges and possibilities ahead together, held in common for the neighbourhood for generations to come."
—Neighbourhood Public Square: The Land Story So Far
This application is for the change of use, enabling works to repair and reinforce the existing buildings, and retrospective planning for temporary structures to learn together on site.
