About This Learning Journey

Our peer group will explore the ideas of Doughnut Economics, applied at a local scale in neighbourhoods, streets and households.

I’m based in Finsbury Park, and would welcome applications from this area and the surrounding neighbourhoods. Londoners from further afield are also welcome, provided you are able to travel here for in-person workshops and meetups.

Each participant will bring their own learning question. You might be looking to develop an existing (or new) community project, or exploring something more personal. You might might feel deeply connected to your local community, or perhaps you feel disconnected and want to change that. Whatever your own enquiry, you can expect your own journey to be enriched by those of your peers.

My own enquiry will focus on nature reconnection (at a neighbourhood scale) and personal finance (at a household scale). I hope to assemble a diverse peer group with many overlapping areas of interest. My own learning question is:

"How can we reconnect with nature in the city? How can the Doughnut Economics model help us reassess our personal finances and habits with time and money?"

We will be spending time in urban nature throughout the journey (nature reserves, parks, and London's ancient woodland).

Meet Your Host

John Ridpath (He/ Him)

"I started my career as a journalist, then decided I needed to learn how to code (initially to keep on top of publishing in the internet age). That led me into the world of technology education, where I helped people understand topics like Open Source Software, Data Science, Machine Learning and Cybersecurity.

Over the past few years, my work increasingly focused on the social implications of technology. I found myself working with others to explore questions such as "how might we design technology in a more responsible way?". At the same time, it was becoming harder to ignore the bigger crises facing humanity. Like so many others, I wanted to join the dots between my own skills and our wider environmental and social context.

Doughnut Economics was one of the books that helped me connect the threads. It inspired me to begin an ongoing learning journey that has involved topics such as Systems Thinking, Biomimicry, Circular Economy, Regenerative Cultures, and nature reconnection.

In September 2021 I joined the "Becoming Crew" Learning Marathon at Enrol Yourself. My learning question is "How can I help people adopt the mindsets of a regenerative economy?". Hosting The Doughnut Economics P2P Learning Journey feels like a great step to take some of these ideas into my neighbourhood.
