Join us as part of a neighbourhood movement, connecting artists, designers, economists, ecologists, gardeners, teachers, neighbours, friends and many more to re-imagine and get to the heart of new economic possibilities for our neighbourhoods. Now more than ever it will need all of us; our skills, creativity, wisdom, hopes and imagination, to pave inspiring, collective, regenerative ways forward, and this is an open invitation.

The word 'economics' comes from the Greek words, 'eco' meaning home and 'nomos' meaning management . Put simply, economics means the art of household management, so how might we steward and manage our planetary home, starting from where we are; in our homes, streets and neighbourhood(s) together?

*“Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next.

We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.”*

— Arundhati Roy

Thanks to the work of our inspiring friends and storytellers at Stories for Life, whose work has one purpose: to help create stories that contribute to the re-design of a healthier economy. Here is what they think we already know, or perhaps should know.

Over the last five years we have been deeply inspired by the work of Doughnut Economics by Kate Raworth, which offers us a playful, practical platform and compass for how we thrive in the 21st century. This involves finding the safe and just space between the social foundations for us to flourish and the planetary boundaries that protect Earth’s life supporting systems, ensuring we don’t continue to exceed our ecological ceiling.

The Doughnut offers us ways to think and design together at a range of scales, with everyday, creative, practical action that is grounded in deep, rigorous, scientific evidence about the scale of the challenges ahead.

A healthy economy should be designed to thrive, not grow

The energy since 2017 and from all we have done together in Birmingham and around the world, from communities, cities and countries convening bold conversations and action about reimagining and remaking our future has been awe inspiring. Through convening, talking, experimenting, testing and playing together, we know more than ever. We got even more practical and intentional together over the past 18 months, as part of a deep long term movement together, and are excited to bring together findings into the first Neighbourhood Doughnut Portrait, launching 27th - 29th October 2022 in Ladywood, Birmingham UK.
