Studio in the Street seeks to build links between architects, students, activists and the public through a programme of creative activities, online and in the street.

They empower the public to improve their streets and campaign for the climate. They want to encourage collaboration between architecture and activism, forming local links through designing and re-imagining public space in an agile, prototype studio.

Intention

The Lockdown Festival of Architecture collaborated with the Anthropocene Architecture School during the past months of isolation. They used the shift to online to host events and activities to discuss the twin climate and corona crises.

How can architects and activists work together?

How do they re-unite?

We wished to map out ideas and test a prototype design studio for activism and architecture 'in the street'. This would connect students and architects with local community groups, and hopefully build networks of solidarity beyond the workshop itself. We wanted to test design briefs and participant organising with this fund.

Process

Due to Covid-19, we decided to pursue the theoretical, pedagogical side of Studio In The Street, rather than the practical methods of construction and organisation.

This was, in hindsight, invaluable as it allowed us to reframe our ideas and challenged assumptions.
